![]() |
|
This coming Saturday, May 12, we will host an Introductory Electric Fly In for the public at our NMSU field. Please come out and fly as you normally would because the intent is to demonstrate our hobby to the public and give those interested an opportunity to take the controls of our club trainer airplane. We will start setting up at around 8:00am and be ready to start giving instruction to those interested around 9:00am or earlier if they show up early. If anyone has an awning for shade it would be appreciated. Joseph Millette will be bringing out his personal UAS equipment and I will bring a glow powered airplane for static displays to show other parts of the hobby. If anyone has an interesting airplane that would also be a good static display it might help generate some interest. Steve Demar and Joseph will be handling most of the instructor pilot duties. A map is available on our web site by going to http://mvmac.org/MVMAC_Electric_Field_Sat_Map.pdf. MVMAC is in the process of working with the city to establish a new flying field located near the intersection of Lohman Ave and Sonoma Ranch Blvd on the east side of Las Cruces. This field is envisioned to handle all types of aircraft for local, regional, and even national competition and recreational flying. We will present additional information in this area as plans become more concrete.
UPDATE AS OF August 21st, 2011 FROM Jim Caldwell:
With Dean's passing, I am now taking the lead regarding our new flying site project with the City of Las Cruces. Dean got the talks restarted with the city and I will do my best to keep everything on track. We are looking at the potential for a first class flying site we, and the City, can all be proud of.
Yesterday afternoon I had a telephone conversation with Klaus Kemmer, Administrator for Solid Waste Operations. There is not much new to report but progress is being made. Before submitting our project to the State for approval he has to complete a measurement study of how much methane gas is being emitted from the land fill. He now has the instruments so that is in progress. Additionally they are doing the surveying that must be accomplished before the property can be transferred from BLM to the City. That is the pacing item and nothing can happen at the site until it belongs to the City. I will contact Klaus for an up-date before our next meeting.
UPDATE AS OF September 16th, 2011 FROM Jim Caldwell:
I just received an update from Klaus Kemmer. Our proposal for a flying site at the landfill has been submitted to the New Mexico Environmental Department. We do not have a time frame for how long it will take, but we will probably hear the result from them before the property is transferred. The BLM is estimating that the transfer to the City is likely to take 9 months. Nothing can be done at the site until it is owned by the City. Klaus is hoping to get a better estimate from the BLM before our October club meeting."
UPDATE AS OF November 7th, 2011 FROM Jim Caldwell:
At our last club meeting on October 26th, I was not able to provide a status of the proposed City Landfill Flying Site. I was finally able to talk with Klaus Kemmer, City Administrator for Solid Waste Disposal, and it sounds like things are progressing well. He hopes to hear from BLM soon and hoping that the property transfer to the City is completed some time in December. He has talked with the Parks Department and everything seems to be on track with them to develop the site as a City Park.
Our original concept with the City was that there would be space at the landfill for us, the Rocket Club, and a place for RC Cars. It has come to my attention that the Rocket Club is not too high on the landfill site plans. I hope to talk with their club President this weekend. If anyone is interested they are going to be launching rockets tomorrow morning out at the ponding area along highway 70 near the Dunn / Holman exit. Go out 70 to the Dunn/Holman exit and turn right. Go about a half mile and then turn left on Cortez Road. That should take you to the launch site.
UPDATE AS OF January 25th, 2012 FROM Jim Caldwell:
During December I was in contact with Klaus Kemmer, the Landfill Administrator, and found out there was no news about our proposed air park on the Landfill. He did mention to me that he had not been able to get any response from the BLM regarding the transfer of the landfill site to the City. I called BLM and was able to talk with the BLM District Manager. They were aware of our project and were to start working on the property transfer during January with a target completion in the fall of 2012.
Yesterday I received an email from the City confirming that the BLM had started working on the property transfer this month. Nothing in writing from the State of New Mexico yet, but there has been verbal communications regarding parking on the landfill site. It looks like the parking will have to be at the lower level, but I think we will be able to get a drop off area with a couple of handicapped parking spots up at our runway level.
